With an extensive 16-story curvilinear curtain wall aslant toward the direction of City Hall, the new Los Angeles United States Federal Courthouse is a channel between modern architectural forms and the distinctiveness of its Civic Center context. This structure is a physical abstract that personifies the four symbols of traditional American courthouse design: the portal, the column, the rotunda, and the cupola. Beyond the reach of history and immensity, it expresses the inherent dignity of the courts and the fundamental democratic view of the significance of the individual. This building, with its semi-lucent structure and green space further portrays a glimpse into humanity and openness. The proposed project involves the construction of a 1,016,000-square-foot courthouse, with at least 150 enclosed parking spaces. The facility would be constructed to meet the 10-year requirements of the District Court and court-related agencies on a site large enough to accommodate a 30-year expansion plan. The presumed downtown site is bounded by First and Second Street and Broadway and Hill Boulevard. The courthouse is currently scheduled to include a minimum of 41 District and Magistrate courtrooms. |
