Karl Ulrich, Associate Professor of Operations and Information Management Course first offeredSpring 1988 Most recently offeredSpring 2003 Course overviewThe focus of Product Design is the integration of the marketing, design, and manufacturing functions of the firm in creating a new product. The primary integrating mechanism for the course is a team project. This course provides tools and methods for creating new products. The course is intended for students with a strong career interest in new product development, entrepreneurship, and/or technology development. The course follows an overall product design methodology, including the identification of customer needs, generation of product concepts, prototyping, and design-for-manufacturing. Projects are based on product opportunities identified by the class. Each student identifies and presents an opportunity to the class. After listening to all of the presentations, each student expresses project preferences. The teaching staff forms project teams based on the preferences expressed by the students. This process is intended to identify the best product opportunities and to match students with opportunities they are excited about. |
